Admire the distinctly beautiful volcanic features in south west St Lucia, where tropical gardens and fascinating sightseeing awaits you.

The south western regions of St Lucia are most notable for their distinctly volcanic features. With dramatic volcanic plugs rising high out of the ground, bubbling sulphur springs, hot mud baths and beautiful tropical gardens, this area is uniquely beautiful. And with a range of luxury holiday accommodation in St Lucia to choose from, you can enjoy your volcanic surroundings in comfort.

Visiting Volcanoes

One of the most fascinating sites in St Lucia is the Pitons, a must see site for a St Lucia holiday. If you’re interested in volcanoes, this site is sure to tickle your fancy. It consists of two volcanic plugs, which essentially are volcanic necks which form when magma hardens within a volcanic vent. Over time, the outer wall erodes and the hardened magma remains, creating an interesting phenomenon.

The Gros Piton rises out of the earth to a height of 771m, and the Petit Piton is close behind it at 743m. Sulphur and hot mud pools are located nearby, evidence of the region’s volcanic activity. Luxury accommodation in St Lucia is not difficult to find, and if this area intrigues you, the Ladera Resort, situated at the top of the Piton Mitan Range will be an ideal base to explore the area while on a St Lucia luxury holiday.

Sulphur Springs

Continuing with the volcanic theme for a St Lucia luxury holiday, the area surrounding this dormant volcano will fascinated even those not particularly taken with volcanoes. The town of Soufriere hosts some of the most interesting volcanic geographical features in the world.

The last major eruption was 40,000 years ago, so you don’t need to worry about volcanic eruptions whilst on a St Lucia holiday. But volcanic activity can still be seen, as sulphur billows from the cracks in the rock, making for exceptional sightseeing. The volcano is fascinating in design. The dome collapsed some 200 years ago, forming a 7 acre caldera. If you want some interesting sightseeing, then this area is ideal for a St Lucia holiday. Active boiling mud pits can be found throughout the area, interesting additions to this beautiful and lush area.

St Lucia Botanical Gardens

Located within the same area as the other volcanic sites, is the St Lucia Botanical Gardens. These are gardens are popular amongst tourists, where tropical plants make for a beautiful afternoon out when on a St Lucia holiday. You can stroll through this tropical paradise and admire the unique beauty of the region’s flora. The Diamond waterfall is also located here, a beautiful fountain made up of healing mineral water. The water in the area is believed to have unique healing properties, used by King Louis XVI and his troops. Natural hot springs occur within the park, with the boiling waters making for beautiful sites to behold.

Restored private baths situated within this beautiful park are available for public use, where you can spend a few hours unwinding in the area’s healing waters as you take in your beautiful surroundings on your St Lucia holiday.
